The vocabulary of the three
What the full text of the 41 volumes reveals: when a concept emerges and recedes, which words characterize each of the three, and what they emphasize in print.
Concept history
How often a word occurs in the writings of each five-year period, per 10,000 words. All spellings and inflected forms are counted together, so Begriff, Begriffe and Begriffs count as one.

Freiheit

Characteristic vocabulary
Words that one of the three uses markedly more often than the other two, ranked by the strength of the difference. The bar shows how often the word occurs in his writings, the tick how often in those of the other two; the number says how many times as often. Clicking a word opens its concept history.
Emphasis
Words set in letter-spaced type or in italics, as the printed texts reproduce them: which words are emphasized most often, and which almost always when they occur.
Method
Counted by machine from the text of the search, main text and notes without headings, after its spelling normalization: daß and dass, Seyn and Sein count as the same word. The figures are as accurate as the transcription, which is still in open beta. Hegel’s excerpts (GW 3 and a section of GW 5) are left out because they reproduce other authors’ texts.
Years: for published works the year of publication, for lectures the year they were given, for manuscripts the year of writing; collective sections are placed at a middle year. Some texts appear in the editions in a later version, such as the Encyclopaedia of 1827 and 1830 or the second edition of Schelling’s Ideen. A five-year period with fewer than 20,000 words by one of the three is left blank in the chart.
Characteristic means: the word occurs at least 40 times in one author and, relative to the length of the texts, more often than in the other two combined; the ranking uses Dunning’s log-likelihood test. Inflected forms of nouns are grouped together. Emphasis is counted from the TEI data of the editions, leaving out the speakers’ names in Schelling’s Bruno. As of .
